Our Goal:
Our goal was to create an engaging and welcoming program that allows younger children to explore a variety of interests in a welcoming, non-committal environment. We sought to integrate educational elements into the program, emphasizing the value of learning about topics less frequently discussed. By combining physical expression through dance with cultural and intellectual exploration, children are introduced to the fundamentals of diverse dance styles while gaining an appreciation for their cultural importance. We chose to make this program free of charge because we believe the true value lies in the shared learning, connection, and sense of community it will foster. This approach ensures that children feel no pressure to "love" dance, but instead have the opportunity of genuine exploration, discovery of new passions, and the chance to build friendships with peers who share similar interests.
Why This Is Important:
Dancing in the Wood River Valley, my sister and I experienced feeling like dance was inferior to other popular sports: skiing, lacrosse, etc. We were able to grow through the community Footlight Dance Centre, but it was still easy to feel like dance was less important. This program hopes to encourage more children to leave their comfort zone and try dance as an extra currricular- even if they only have minor curiosity in it. We are hoping this will open more doors to support the expansion of arts within the Wood River Valley.
The Program:
Consisting of two weeks of action-packed mornings, Future Stars has a dynamic schedule that will allow your children to discover the fundamentals of a variety of dances.
Our Dance Curriculum:
Hip-Hop: A high-energy street style that emphasizes rhythm, groove, freestyle movement, and expressive individuality. It often includes breaking, popping, locking, and contemporary urban dance trends.
Ballet: A classical, highly technical dance form known for grace, precision, and structured movements. It emphasizes posture, turnout, and discipline, often telling stories through choreography.
Tap: A rhythmic dance style where dancers use metal plates on their shoes to create percussive sounds. It blends movement and music, requiring coordination, timing, and musicality.
Jazz: A dynamic and expressive dance style combining sharp, fluid, and rhythmic movements. It often features isolations, leaps, and turns, with roots in African and Caribbean dance traditions.
Modern: A contemporary style developed as a reaction against ballet, focusing on natural movement, groundedness, and emotional expression. It often uses floor work, contractions, and improvisation.
At Future Stars, we believe learning about the different dance forms we practice helps create a holisitc understanding of the art
At the beginning of each new unit, there will be a learning opportunity to understand the history, culture, and importance of each style
The program will run from June 15th to June 26th
Snack and water will be provided for participants of the camp
Walk-ins and details tailored to your child's schedule are completely welcome- this program is made to help your child grow in any way!
